Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) members are descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who have lived in this area since before recorded time. Squamish Nation Council provides support and services to its members including family services, education, employment and training, housing and health services. It also works to celebrate Squamish Nation traditions, arts, and culture by promoting its artists, dance groups, singers, and drummers.

Squamish Nation and the District of Squamish recognize that the interests of all persons living in their communities are best served by working together and building an effective government-to-government relationship. To assist in establishing a long-term, meaningful relationship in relation to their respective communities, Squamish Nation and the District of Squamish entered into a Co-operation Protocol in 2007 and an Intergovernmental Co-operation Accord in 2011.
