Section B – Self Inspection –You are required to do a Self Inspection of your Coop/Pen and Electrical Fencing by meeting the following requirements. By checking the boxes your are agreeing to the Terms and conditions for keeping urban hens in Squamish.

Building Requirements

Coop and a Pen meet the requirement with a minimum of 0.37m2 in floor area and 0.92m in height per Hen.

Each Hen has its own nesting box and a perch is at least fifteen (15) centimetres long.

The Coop and Pen do not exceed 10m2 floor area or 2m in height.

The Coop and Pen are situated in a back yard only which has a continuous fence that is in accordance to the Zoning Bylaw.

The Coop is situated in accordance with the accessory building setbacks identified in the Zoning Bylaw.

The Coop and Pen are situated at least 3m away from any windows or dwelling doors.

The Coop and Pen are situated in such a way that would reasonably prevent entry by wildlife.

The Coop and Pen are fully enclosed by electric fencing and situated no less than 1 metre from the electric fencing per the Zoning Bylaw.

Each Coop and Pen meets requirements to be secure from other animals and prevents wildlife accessing.

Electric Fencing Requirements

Urban hen coops and pens is surrounded by electric security fencing at a minimum distance of 1m from hen coop, pen .

a minimum of six strands of 12.5 gauge high tensile galvanized wire is required, with the bottom wire no more than 5 cm from the ground and subsequent wires spaced at an interval of no greater than 25 cm apart, with alternating positive and negative stran

Electric fence shall be programmed to a minimum conduction of 6000 volts to a maximum of 10,000 volts.

Corner posts and gate areas must be braced to ensure posts will not bend or pull from the ground when the wire is pulled to the appropriate tension. Install guy wires or inside angle braces to alleviate any tightening/loosening problems.

Ground the system using three (3) 16mm ground rods, 2-3 m deep and spaced at least three (3) m apart, connected to the negative output terminal of the fence charger by ground clamps. Place the rods in moist soil when available.

I acknowledge a random inspection by District of Squamish staff (or Animal Control Officers) may be performed at anytime.
