The District of Squamish is creating a plan to effectively manage stormwater for Brackendale and Garibaldi Estates (Squamish River East and Mamquam River watersheds. A new Sustainable Stormwater Service Delivery Plan will look at how stormwater is being managed today and thoughtfully preparing for change that might come with community growth and climate change. The plan will also chart a path for investments the District will make to manage stormwater in a way that recognizes co-benefits and trade-offs related to community growth, flood protection, environmental protection, and affordability.
Watersheds, the built and natural assets that make up stormwater systems, climate change, and communities are all complex. The District’s Sustainable Stormwater Service Delivery Plan will be an innovative approach to asset management, stormwater management, environmental management, land use, climate resilience, and financial sustainability.
Successfully delivering stormwater requires collaboration among people with diverse expertise and experience. District staff from the Engineering, Environment, Finance, Planning, and Public Works departments will be involved in developing and implementing the SSSDP, with consulting support provided by Urban Systems Ltd. The community will also be engaged through the process.
The SSSDP will be developed over approximately two years. It is expected to be completed by October 2025.
The District of Squamish has received federal funding in the amount of $400,000 from the Strategic Priorities Fund stream of the Canada Community-Building Fund for this project. The total cost of the project is $400,000 with an additional $50,000 of in-kind support provided by District of Squamish staff. This project is fully funded by the grant.
